چکیده

Ecient parallel schemes for carry-propagation-free addition of modi®ed signed-digit trinary numbers are presented. The necessary minterms for implementation using an optical programmable logic array area are derived. The proposed schemes require only a truth table of 25 entries compared with an earlier scheme of 625 entries. The proposed schemes are amenable to optical implementation. Experimental results using an optical programmable logic array are demonstrated. The experiments show the problems of noise and crosstalk. This suggests some dc bias is necessary to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the optical circuit. # 1998 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recoded and nonrecoded trinary signed-digit adders and multipliers with redundant-bit representations.

Highly-efficient two-step recoded and one-step nonrecoded trinary signed-digit (TSD) carry-free adders-subtracters are presented on the basis of redundant-bit representation for the operands' digits. It has been shown that only 24 (30) minterms are needed to implement the two-step recoded (the one-step nonrecoded) TSD addition for any operand length. Optical implementation of the proposed arith...

Design and Synthesis of High Speed Low Power Signed Digit Adders

Signed digit (SD) number systems provide the possibility of constant-time addition, where inter-digit carry propagation is eliminated. Such carry-free addition is primarily a three-step process; adding the equally weighted SDs to form the primary sum digits, decomposing the latter to interim sum digits and transfer digits, which commonly belong to {–1, 0, 1}, and finally adding the tra...

New Symbolic Substitution Algorithms for Optical Arithmetic using Signed -Digit Representation

In this paper, we present a new approach to designing optical digital arithmetic systems. We present new arithmetic algorithms based on a modified signed -digit number representation. New Signed -digit symbolic substitution rules are introduced to implement them. These signed -digit arithmetic algorithms are well suited for optical implementation because, of the confined carry propagation withi...

Arithmetic Circuits Combining Residue and Signed-Digit Representations

This paper discusses the use of signed-digit representations in the implementation of fast and efficient residue-arithmetic units. Improvements to existing signed-digit modulo adders and multipliers are suggested and new converters for the residue signed-digit number system are described for the moduli . By extending an existing efficient signed-digit adder design to handle modulo operations, w...
